About Hrísdalur

Hrísdalur is in Eyja- og Miklaholtshreppur in Snæfellsnes (west Iceland), just over 130 km out of Reykjavík (one hour and 45 minutes drive from Reykjavík).  The farm is about 10 km from the coast and sits on the bank of Straumfjarðará the princess of salmon fishing rivers in Iceland.  The farmland is about 300 hectares, all within a fence and paddocks.

The young horses graze in smaller groups, separated by gender and age. We keep a close eye on our mares and stallions, all grazing in good view of our stable

The owner

The owner is Gunnar Sturluson and he has owned and operated the farm from 2003.  The prior owner had a sheep farm but in 2004 we started to rebuild the place as a horse farm, first the house, and then the stable and riding hall in 2006.  Every year we have continued to improve the facilities, new fences, regrowing the land, a new roof was put on the riding hall in 2011 and that year we also started to build an oval track.  We got a treadmill in the stable in 2012. Future plans involve further improvements of the facilities as well as planting of trees and work on the farmland, making it better for farming and outdoor recreation.

The trainers

Siguroddur Pétursson and Ásdís Ólöf Sigurðardóttir started to work in Hrísdalur 2006 and have since then been in charge of the training and taken care of the day to day operations.
